AI can save time drafting replies to Google reviews, especially short thank-yous, as long as a person reads and edits every reply before it's posted. The risks are replies that all sound the same, mention details that aren't true, or handle a complaint badly. Google itself now offers drafting help, as its Gemini web app can draft replies to reviews for some Business Profile owners. What you should never do is use AI to write customer reviews, which breaks Google's rules and UK law.

What a review reply generator does
A review reply generator takes the text of a review and writes a suggested reply. Some are built into review management software, some are free websites, and many people simply paste reviews into a general AI chatbot and ask for a reply.
Google has added its own option. Its help pages say the Gemini web app can be connected to a Business Profile and used to draft or delete replies to reviews, as well as summarise recent feedback. There are conditions. You need to be an owner or manager of only one verified Business Profile, be 18 or over, and sign in with a personal Google account rather than a work one. It's still rolling out, so it may not be available on your account yet.
Where AI helps
- Volume. If you get dozens of reviews a week, drafting short thank-yous for each one takes time. A tool can give you a starting point to tweak.
- Getting started. Some people find a blank box harder than editing a draft, particularly for a tricky review.
- Tidying up. If writing isn't your strong point, AI can help turn a rough reply into clear, polite English.
- Reviews in other languages. It can help you understand a review written in another language and draft a reply in the same one.
Where it goes wrong
The problems come when replies are posted without a person reading them.
- Sameness. AI replies tend to follow the same pattern, and a profile full of near-identical replies looks automated to anyone reading it.
- Made-up details. A tool may thank someone for a dish they didn't order or a service you don't offer.
- Promises you didn't mean. Drafts sometimes offer refunds, discounts or call-backs that nobody has agreed to.
- Complaints handled badly. A generic apology under a serious complaint can read as if nobody cared enough to write properly.
- Privacy. Pasting customer details from your own records into an AI tool to "personalise" a reply puts those details somewhere you may not want them.

A sensible way to use it
- Let the tool draft thank-you replies for positive reviews, then read each one and add a real detail, such as the staff member's name or what the customer bought.
- Write replies to negative reviews yourself, or at least rewrite the draft heavily. These need the most care, as a poor reply to a complaint stays on public view.
- Never let a tool post replies automatically without someone checking them first.
- Keep customers' personal details out of what you paste into the tool.
- Read the final reply out loud. If it doesn't sound like you, change it.

Never use AI to write reviews
Drafting your own replies with AI is fine. Using AI to create reviews is a different matter. Google's policies don't allow reviews that aren't based on a genuine experience, and they don't allow businesses to ask customers to include specific content in their reviews. In the UK, writing or commissioning fake reviews has been banned under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 since 6 April 2025.
That rules out posting AI-written reviews yourself, paying someone who does, and offering customers a ready-written review to copy and paste. Our article on the UK fake review law explains what's covered. If you want more reviews, the reliable way is to ask every real customer and make it easy for them, for example with your review link or a Google review card they can tap.
Common questions
Does Google penalise AI-written replies to reviews?
Google hasn't published a rule against replies drafted with AI, and its own Gemini app offers to draft them. Replies are checked against Google's content policies however they're written.
Is there a free Google review reply generator?
Several free tools exist, and general AI chatbots can draft replies too. Google's Gemini web app can draft replies for eligible Business Profile owners.
Can AI reply to all my Google reviews automatically?
Some software can post replies automatically, but it's better to have a person check each one before it appears on your profile.
Can I give customers an AI-written review to post?
No. Google doesn't allow businesses to request specific content in reviews, and a review that isn't the customer's own words isn't a genuine review.
