How to Set Up Google Reviews for Your Business

To get Google reviews for your business, you need a verified Google Business Profile. Once the profile is live, reviews are switched on automatically and customers can leave them from Google Search and Google Maps. There's no separate review setting to turn on, and it's free. Setting up the profile takes about 15 minutes, and verification can take anything from a few minutes to a couple of weeks depending on the method Google asks you to use.

Step 1: Check whether your business already has a profile

Search Google Maps for your business name and postcode. Google sometimes creates a listing automatically from public information, and customers may already be leaving reviews on it. If you find one, choose "Own this business?" or "Claim this business" rather than creating a duplicate.

Step 2: Create or claim your profile

  1. Go to Google Business Profile at business.google.com and sign in with the Google account you want to manage it from. A shared business email is better than a personal one, so the profile isn't lost if someone leaves.
  2. Enter your business name exactly as customers know it.
  3. Choose your primary category carefully, such as "Hairdresser", "Plumber" or "Italian restaurant". This affects which searches you appear in.
  4. Add your address if customers visit you, or set a service area if you go to them.
  5. Add your phone number and website.

Step 3: Verify the profile

Google needs to confirm that you run the business. Depending on the business, it may offer a phone call or text, an email, a short video of your premises and signage, or a postcard with a code sent to your address. You can't choose the method freely, as Google decides what's available. Reviews and most profile tools only become fully available once you're verified.

Step 4: Fill in the rest of the profile

  • Opening hours, including bank holidays.
  • A short description of what you do and where.
  • Your services or menu, with prices if you're happy to show them.
  • Photos of your premises, your work and your team.

A complete profile helps you appear in more searches, and customers are more likely to review a business that looks active.

Step 5: Get your review link and start asking

Once you're verified, Google gives you a short link that opens your review form. Our guide on how to get your Google review link shows where to find it. Share it by email and text, turn it into a QR code, or have it programmed onto an NFC Google review card that customers tap with their phone.

Then ask every customer. Most first reviews come from regular customers who are glad to help a business they like. Our guide on how to ask customers for Google reviews has wordings to use.

Common questions

Can I turn off Google reviews for my business?

No. Reviews can't be switched off on a Business Profile. You can reply to reviews and report ones that break Google's rules.

Do I need a website to get Google reviews?

No. A Business Profile works without a website, although having one helps customers and your ranking.

Can a home-based business get Google reviews?

Yes. You can set a service area and hide your home address, and customers can still find and review you.

How much does a Google Business Profile cost?

Nothing. It's free. Be wary of anyone charging to "register" your business with Google.
